The Baldwin's had 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls but one of each died in infancy. One of the Baldwin sons is the hard working man who founded A and B Sugar company and brought water out of the mountains to water the sugar cane... fascinating history.

We are here to take this train at Puukolii to Lahaina and it will turn around and take us to dinner at Kaanapali and then bring us back to our cars parked here later this evening. It is very warm in the sun...and a little humid

This is pretty much the only kind of plant growing in the lava... called silversword..unique plant
There is Larry inside the lookout at over 10,000 feet elevation... the name means "The House of the Rising Sun" but when we arrived it was covered in clouds but they soon parted.. yay!
Trying to look south to see if we could see the island of Hawaii, or what's called the Big Island but the clouds obscured the view..
Finally the clouds parted a little so we could see some of the Haleakala Crater... such a desolate landscape but beautiful...
We finally found the Lavender Gardens... not easy... parked the car on this grassy spot.. looked up the hill to all of the little lavender mounds...
The head of this bloom had to be at least a foot across... huge!

Of course a picture of one of the 45 varieties of lavender that Mr. Chang grows. He said there are at least 200 kinds... amazing!
